JOEY

August 2023

I leave the living room, disgusted.

All the talks we had about keeping this person at arm’s length just went up in smoke. Victoria appears to be out there spilling her guts to this woman. Rage seethes beneath the surface of my mind. I slam the door to my room and pace.

What is she thinking?

This is the worst thing she could possibly do.

It’s obvious that this woman wants something from her. I feel like it goes beyond the story of the rescue and Victoria’s endless compassion for animals. She wants something deeper. She wants the raw emotions of what happened in her past.

I have to intervene.

I sit down on the bed and cross my legs, putting my head into my hands. I think about going back out there, interrupting everything. But part of me is too angry to do that. I don’t feel like I’m wanted there. When I looked at Victoria, wondering if she wanted me to come out there and break up the conversation, the look on her face told me everything I needed to know.

She was enjoying talking to this woman. Which is the worst thing that could possibly happen.

She’s lulling her into a false sense of security.

I shake my head, unsure what to do next. The only thing I want is to keep Victoria from putting herself in a position of vulnerability that she doesn’t really need to be in. She’s such a kind person with such a soft heart. It’s in her nature that she might fall for whatever bullshit this journalist is spinning. I just need to get her through the next few days. Then this person will be out of our hair.

I sigh, frustrated. I’ve fought too hard to make my life some semblance of normal, and I love it here. I don’t want anything to change. I don’t want to have to find somewhere else. And most of all, I don’t want to leave Victoria behind. In reality, I couldn’t. I don’t think either of us could make it without the other.

The thought horrifies me to even contemplate.

I tell myself this is part of what needs to happen. I just need to help keep things low key and make sure it all goes smoothly. I need to prevent Victoria from getting hurt. I need to make sure that things stay on track.

I need to get back out there.

I get up from the bed and head for the patio. When I open the door, peals of laughter spill into the house. Great. I step outside and when Victoria sees me, she stops laughing.

“What’s so funny?” I ask, trying to sound pleasant.

“We were just swapping some funny stories,” Allie says with a slur in her voice. A new open bottle of wine sits between them and it looks like Victoria got another wine glass and has been helping herself. Not an ideal situation.

“Are you sure you two aren’t ready for bed?” I ask, forcing a smile. I take a seat at the table.

“You’re right, Joey,” Allie says.
